One dead, one injured after shooting at New Mexico Air Force base

US Air Force Base in New Mexico reported a fatal shooting early Saturday morning following an “off-base pursuit” that ensures quick response from local law enforcement agencies.

Kirtland Air Force Base said the 377th Security Force Company was called to the incident around 2am.

“One aviator suffered a non-fatal gunshot wound in his hand and was taken to UNM Medical Center for treatment. According to a press release from the Air Force, he was not subject to life-threatening injuries.

“Other aviators were found dead at the scene. The causes and incidents of the death remain under investigation by local government.”

The Kirtland Truman Gate Pass office will remain closed until further notice, authorities said. Military officials said the incident was not caused by external attacks or terrorist acts.

The Air Force has not made public the names of the victims or shooters.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
