Newly sworn FBI director Kash Patel will be tapped by President Donald Trump to serve as director of alcohol, cigarettes, firearms and explosives (ATF).

Multiple outlets have confirmed that Patel is set up to serve as the leader of two largest agencies within the Department of Justice on behalf of Marvin Richardson, the current acting director of the ATF.

The ATF budget is approximately $1.6 billion and employs more than 5,200 individuals. The agency focuses primarily on implementing federal firearms, explosions and arson laws.

Patel's appointment to the ATF will be announced soon next week, and may be announced just days after Attorney General Pam Bondi fired ATF's lead lawyer, Pamela Hicks, for “targeting gun owners.” It has sex.

“It won't happen under this administration,” Bondy added.

Under the Biden administration, the ATF introduced several new firearms regulations requiring dealers to perform background checks at gun shows, as well as regulations relating to ghost guns.

Newest ATF Director, Steve Dettelbach, resigned after leading the agency for more than two years.

“Coach Ditelbach offered President Biden a resignation on January 18, 2025, as typical in the transition and consistent with the memorandum sent to all presidential appointees on December 19th.” writes Christina Mastropasca, AFT's head of public affairs. “To lead the brave and incredible men and women at ATF was the greatest honor of his professional life.”

President Donald Trump is a critic of both Detterbach and the ATF, and said he plans to “loot the radical gun Glover Steve Detelbach” in his campaign.

Congressional Republicans have proposed a $188 million reduction in agency budgets during fiscal year 2025, and the agency continues to restrict and regulate gun owners while overstepping its intended purpose. They claim that they are increasing the number.
