Thousands of individuals sign online petition It urges tech billionaire Elon Musk to revoke Canadian citizenship over his involvement in the Trump administration, which petitioners argue undermine Canada's sovereignty.
The petition progressing through the Canadian House of Representatives was filed by Quariar Reid, author of Nanaimo, British Columbia.
According to the Canadian outlet, Democrat Charlie Angus, a vocal critic for Musk, also supported the petition. CTV News.
The petition asks Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to cancel his mask citizenship and Canadian passport.
An e-pet requires the House of Representatives to present more than 500 signatures, which could lead to a formal response from the government.
Musk was born in South Africa, but he retains Canadian citizenship due to his mother May Musk, born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Regina, Canada.
The petition accused Musk of “engaging in activities that are contrary to Canada's national interests” by acting as an advisor to President Trump. The billionaire has become “a member of a foreign government trying to erase Canada's sovereignty.”
Trump recently threatened to impose substantial tariffs on Canadian goods, claiming that the US could annex the country and turn it into a 51st state, earning a da of Canadian citizens.
On February 11th, Trudeau reacted strongly to Trump administration's tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. Criticizing the decision, he called the tariffs “completely unjust.” He said the country would respond, “If I do that.”
“Taxes on Canadian steel and aluminum will be completely unfair,” Trudeau told reporters.
