French fugitive whose escape left two officers dead arrested in Romania | France

Mohamed Amra, known as “Fly”, was arrested near a shopping centre in Bucharest on Saturday after being identified by Romanian police. The Bucharest Court of Appeals approved the extradition request on Sunday.

Amra escaped after being pronounced in the robbery of the Normandy town of Evelu. He was also under investigation for the inviting an organized attempted murder and death, French prosecutors said.

The International Police Agency Interpol issued a notice of his arrest, but French investigators warned counterparts in other countries after suspecting Amra had left France.

Following Amra's arrest on Saturday, French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed his capture as a “terrifying success” and praised his European colleagues for completing a long cross-border hunt.

Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau says Amra is suspected of having ties to the Marseille organized crime syndicate and leading a drug trafficking network.

As of Monday night, 25 people had been detained in multiple countries where they suspected any role in his escape or aftermath, Paris prosecutors said.
