200-plus Democratic lawmakers backing lawsuit seeking to block CFPB dismantling

More than 200 Democrats in the House have filed Amicas briefs in support of a lawsuit aimed at preventing the dismantling of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).

Democrats I'll fight over simple thingsIt was filed in US District Court in Washington, but President Trump's efforts to weaken the CFPB have caused “substantial and irreversible” damage to consumers. They further argued that these actions violated the law by disrupting the constitutional separation of power.

“The defendant's suspension order will have serious consequences for Americans. The CFPB is a huge success,” the lawmaker said.

Democrats also said in their brief that the president could oppose laws enacted by Congress. “When that happens, the relief is to participate in the political process and make policy proposals to Congress because Congress is authorized to enact laws and is the only branch of the government that will enact laws that will dismantle statutory bodies as relevant here,” Brief said.

Rep. Maxine Waters (Calif.), a top Democrat on the Financial Services Committee, is working with House minority leaders Hakem Jeffries (DN.Y.), Jonegus (D-Colo.) and Jamie Raskin (D-MD.).

So far, more than 200 House Democrats have supported the summary.

As tech billionaire Elon Musk attempted to cut down the size of the federal workforce, CFPB Director Russell Vert issued several directives this month that have halted much of the agency's operations.

The National Treasury employee union, which represents around 155,000 federal workers, has since filed a lawsuit against Vought, stating that his actions were illegal.

This Amicus brief comes from a task force recently created by House Democrats and deals with the “harm” inflicted by the Trump administration.

In a letter issued on February 10th, Jeffries announced the creation of a rapid response task force and litigation working group to strengthen the Democrats' “continued efforts to push back the far-right extremism that is relentlessly unleashed by the American people.”

Earlier this month, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) accused the Trump administration of trying to shut down the CFPB to benefit mask payment platform X Money.

“The CFPB is there to make sure Elon Musk's new project is scamming you and can't steal your personal data,” she said. This is why Musk is chasing agents.
