First Black GOP congresswoman shares shocking brain cancer diagnosis

Mia Love, a former lawmaker who became the first black woman to be elected to Congress for the GOP, shared the new harsh reality of brain cancer diagnosis in a statement issued Saturday.

Love's family, 49, said she was diagnosed with glioblastoma and had stopped all treatment for the malignant tumor because the disease had progressed too much.

“Hello friends, I'm Mia's daughter Abigare. Many of you know that moms are fighting GBM brain tumors,” says doting daughter. I wrote it to X through my mother's account.

“Sadly, her cancer is no longer responding to treatment and the cancer is progressing. We have changed our focus from treatment to enjoying the rest of our time with her,” writes Abigare.

The mother of three was diagnosed with glioblastoma in 2022 and revealed their diagnosis in 2023. Glioblastoma manifests in the form of brain tumors. It is an aggressive form of cancer whose exact cause is unknown.

Before being elected to council in 2014, Love was a local politician in Saratoga Springs, Utah, and became a member of the city council in 2003 and rose to mayor in 2010.

She was unable to win reelection in 2018, and was upset by Democrat Ben McDums with under 700 votes.

Ai, the daughter of a Haitian immigrant, was born in New York City and lived in Brooklyn until the age of five when her family moved to Norwalk, Connecticut.

A fellow Republican responded by pouring support into the sad news of Saturday.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox also expressed his support.

“Mia Love serves Utah with sincerity, and her power and grace continue to inspire us. Our hearts are in Mia and her family during this difficult time. Utah stands with you,” he wrote.

Epa Lee Zeldin's secretary also spoke about the sad news.

“Meer and I were elected to Congress together in 2014. She has since been one of my closest friends in her life. She is an incredibly brave fighter, and the Zeldins will only love her forever,” says a former New York lawmaker. I wrote it on x.

The 49-year-old shares three children, Alessa, Abigail and Payton with her husband, Jason Love.
