L.A. Could Recover from Fires by 2029 — If Rebuilding Starts Quickly

Los Angeles was able to recover from the Pallisard and Eton fires by 2029, but that's the best scenario, according to a new report on the local economic impact of the disaster.

The study, published last week by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation, estimates that the total property losses as a result of the January fire are “$28 billion to $53.8 billion.” Economically, this impact represents a loss of $4.6 billion to $8.9 billion in Los Angeles County's economic output over five years (2025-2029) and a tax loss of $0.73 billion to $1.4 billion in tax revenues to the county due to losses in business and job losses in the region.

This study found that slightly more than half of all property within the Palisade fire area (Pacific Palisade, Malibu, Topanga Canyon, and Santa Monica) were affected, and less than half of all property within the Eton Fire Area (Pasadena and Altadena). The damage to businesses has been further exacerbated, at least in the Palisade fire area. There, 60% of businesses were affected by the fire. In total, around 10,000 employees were affected by both fires.

The report covers three scenarios for recovery.

Scenario 1, Fastest Recovery, Annual Economic Losses fell to 57% in the second year (2026) and 57% in the third year (2027) and fully recovered by the fourth year [2029]. Scenario 2 saw a slow recovery, with revenue loss of $169.7 million, and 1,370 jobs still affected by 2029, achieving a full recovery by 2032. Scenario 3, the slowest recovery of the three, shows revenue losses of $419.8 million and 3,290 jobs five years later, extending to 2034.

The report, which studied fire recovery patterns elsewhere, says that reconstruction should begin as soon as possible to prevent future fires.

“Success depends on careful orchestration of multiple factors: strong leadership, sustained community engagement, and flexible adaptation of proven recovery practices to local circumstances. A comprehensive approach must balance immediate needs and long-term resilience goals while maintaining sensitivity to each community's unique traits,” the report states.

The target for 2029 is certainly ambitious. Breitbart News learned last week that the start date for the local public school rebuilding was only 2028.

West Side Current It's attracting attention The report was commissioned by the Southern California Leadership Council, led by former California Gray Davis, and the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation. Davis told journalists that speed of rebuilding is the most important factor, but added that rebuilt homes need to resist the fire.
