Brave New World’ Remains #1 in Weak Oscars Weekend

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Captain America: Brave New World has continued to fall, but hovering more than anything else with weaker weekend box office revenues.

Studio estimates show that Disney-Marvel's latest offering brought another $15 million when the majority of Hollywood's attention was at the Oscars.

Anthony Mackey-led Captain America: Brave New World opened strongly for around $120 million over the three-day weekend last month, but plunged to $28.2 million last week in one of the Marvel movie's most important two-week drops. It has earned $163.7 since its release.

It was criticized by many critics and audiences and failed to bring about some hoped Marvel reset. The tasks currently fall into “Thunderbolts” in May and “Fantastic Four: First Steps” in July. However, “Captain America” faces most of the competition until March and is able to remain number one for a while.

The only significant new release of the weekend, Focus won “Last Breath” and won just $7.8 million. The base-based adventure starring Woody Harrelson, Simi Lew and Chris Lemons is about a daily deep-sea mission that gets grossly wrong when young divers are stuck about 300 feet below the surface.

It received strong reviews, and Associated Press' Lindsay Barr praises the “white knuckle experience” and “pure suspense and unsettling” it brings.

In third place was Oz Perkins' “The Monkey,” which brought in $6.4 million in a two-week total of $24.6 million. It was one of the most powerful openings in the indie distributor neon of the film “Anola,” and its director, Sean Baker, was able to make a big mark at the Oscars later on Sunday.

“The Monkey” marks another low-budget collaboration between Perkins and Neon, where Longlegs brought $126.9 million worldwide last year.

“Peru Paddington” came in fourth, totaling $31.4 million over the third weekend with $4.5 million.
