Sabrina Ionescu more than an investor for new NWSL franchise

Liberty Star Sabrina Ionescu is expanding its business portfolio.

Ionescu is Bay FC's latest investor, the NWSL club announced Monday.

Originally from Walnut Creek, California, Ionescu will serve as the club's “commercial advisor.”

According to the release, the WNBA champions will not only support Bay FC with a commercial strategy, but also support players who want to expand their brand support.

Ionescu said he is “excited” to join the NWSL team, which began its second season later this month.

“I fully believe in the club's vision and the potential to have a profound impact both inside and outside of women's football,” Ionescu said in a statement. “The Bay FC team and I look forward to promoting the branding partnership of Bay FC athletes and contributing to the overall success of the club. As someone with a deep connection to the Bay Area, this opportunity is even more important and I am truly honored to be part of such an extraordinary effort to continue growing women's sport.”

At just 27 years old, Ionescu has already built an impressive business footprint.

The 2024 Olympic gold medalist's latest sneaker, the Nike Sabrina 2, is the second most worn shoe in the NBA last month. According to kixstats.com. Ionescu deals in particular with Body Armor, Fan, AT&T, Michelob Ultra, and more.

Bay FC CEO Brady Stewart called Ionescu the “ultimate innovator” and praised her for creating a new pathway to athlete success both in and out of the sport.

Bay FC will hold a regular season against Utah Royals FC on March 15th.
