New York officials have begun firing state prison guards who failed to comply with their contracts to end illegal labor strikes.
The state's Homeland Security Commissioner Jackie Bray said the end began on Sunday and the state began canceling health insurance benefits for corrections officers who continue to attack, as well as dependents, on Monday.
Thousands of officers will be fired and thousands will lose health insurance benefits, Bray said.
“We haven't even mentioned any of these actions lightly,” Bray said. “We tried every turn to get people back to work without taking these actions.”

On Thursday, New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced a binding agreement between the state and the officers, ending the strike. Under the contract, the officers were required to return to work by Saturday to avoid disciplinary action for Pickett, as labor measures violate state laws that prohibit strikes by most civil servants.
This happens when state police began investigating the deaths of prisoners in one of the state prisons over the weekend.
Messiah Nantwi, 22, who was housed at a mid-term correctional facility, passed away on Saturday at a hospital in Utica.
Nantwi entered the state prison system in May and sentenced him to five years in prison for two criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the 2021 shooting involving police officers. Nantwi, who was represented by the Public Defender's office, was also awaiting trial in 2023 for the deaths of two men.
Authorities refused to provide additional details about what led to his death, but other inmates told the New York Times that Nantwi was brutally beaten by correctional officers.
“He was imprisoned, but he still has the right to basic human dignity and safety, just like all of us,” Stan Germany, executive director of Defender Services in New York County, said in a statement. “Instead, he suffered a violent and pointless death at the hands of a state corrections officer operating in a toxic culture that our society primarily ignores.”
The Department of Corrections said 11 staff members have been placed on administrative leave and ongoing findings regarding Nantwi's death are pending.
The medium term is across from Mercy Correctional Facility, and six security guards were charged with murder in December after defeating the death of Robert Brooks.

Another inmate, 61-year-old Jonathon Grant, was declared dead last month after he was found to be unresponsive with his cells at the Auburn Correctional Facility amid on the ongoing labor attack, but it is unclear whether prison personnel played a role in his death.
The way the grant was killed will be determined by the prosecutor. The office of the public defense attorney who provided him with a lawyer expressed concern that the strike could have affected the inmate's medical care.
Officers went out on February 17th and began protesting working conditions in state prisons.
Jose Saldana, director of the release of the prison campaign, said the security guards were impressive as “distracting” from the attention of inmate abuse.
“To put it more frankly, security guards hold tens of thousands of hostages incarcerated people, and their basic needs for survival are often unmet, often in order to demand more power to injure those who are detained,” Saldana said.
The agreement between the state and the executive union to end the executive strike included ways to address the lack of staffing and minimise 24-hour overtime shifts. The contract also provides a temporary increase in overtime costs and a potential change in wage measures.

The agreement also included a 90-day suspension of the law restricting the use of solitary confinement. During the suspension, states must assess whether reviving the law poses an irrational risk to the safety of staff and inmates.
Hochul deployed national guards in several prisons to fill up for the Striging Mastor.
Corrections Chair Daniel Martasquero said Monday that the number of facilities visitors have soaked between 38 and 32 remains suspended in prisons in all states.
“Regardless of when this ends or how this ends, our long-term plan is to recruit more Amendment Officers and recruit more Amendment Officers as it is safer when our facilities are fully staffed,” Bray said. “That job can't really begin in earnest until people get back to work and we finish the strike.”
