Joey Molland, Badfinger musician, dead at 77

Joey Moland, the last surviving member of Welsh rock band Badfinger in the 1970s, has passed away. He was 77 years old.

Paul Davy, a longtime friend of Moland and social media manager, told Fox News Digital that the musician passed away on Saturday, March 1st due to complications from diabetes and pneumonia. He was in the hospital for only three months at the time of his death.

“Well, the day we arrived that we didn't want to see,” the statement read. “Joey (Joseph Charles) Moland passed away last night and surrounded by Mary (his partner), his two sons and other family members, at 11:39pm CST.”

“Needless to say, I knew the situation was bad, but it was still a shock to the system. If you're reading this for the first time, it's a shock to you too,” the statement continued. “Thank you, Joey… thank you for keeping the band's music alive for so long and being friends with all of us.”

“Joey was vaguely ill throughout the fall and acquired a very bad bacterial infection due to diabetes in early December,” a message from Gofundme read. “The infection caused sepsis, which moved his body and harmed multiple important organs and bones.”

Moland's life changed in 1969 when he joined Badfinger along with former members Pete Ham, Tom Evans and Mike Gibbins.

The band saw mega success with hits like “Baby Blue,” “No matter what,” “Daily,” and “Without you.” They were the first band to be signed to Apple Records, the Beatles label.

According to USA TODAYMoland also worked on various solo Beatles projects, including George Harrison's “Everything Pass,” “The Bangladeshi Concert,” and John Lennon's 1971 album “Imagine.”

Later in his career, Moland released multiple solo albums, often performing live alongside his own songs and several Beatles tributes.

“I owe him that much,” Davy told USA Today. “He always believed in me.”

“That's how he made you feel,” Davy continued. “Whenever I sign a signature (at the festival), I have some big name stars from the Beatles world, but Joey's line on the signature table was five times longer than the special times of the others, so in reality, I'd say, 'Yeah, we have to move along here.'” He'd say, 'There's no one, I'm having a conversation with this guy, don't cut me off!”
