Ontario Prime Minister Doug Ford said he hopes the tariff battle between the US and Canada will end within days.
“I hope it will stop within the next few days…and I'm not just saying that,” Ford told News Nation's Blake Berman on “Hill” Tuesday.
“It's an absolute disaster for both countries, people will be unemployed, plants will be closed, assembly lines will be closed, and inflation will occur within a few days,” he continued. “So this is a shame. One person has a responsibility and that's President Trump.”
On Tuesday, the president imposed a 25% import duties on Canada and Mexico. Trump also threatened to return to and from Canada if it counterattacked with retaliatory actions.
“Explain to Canadian Governor Trudeau that if he places a retaliation fee on the US, our mutual tariffs will soon increase as well!” Trump said in a post on True Society.
On Monday, Ford said it was ready to halt electricity exports to the US if Trump's tariffs pass.
“If they want to annihilate Ontario, I'll do it all – including cutting off their energy with a smile on my face,” Ford said previously, according to the Toronto Sun.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau went after Trump's tariffs targeting Canada on Tuesday, noting the editors of the Wall Street Journal called “Silly.”
“Now, I want to talk directly to certain Americans,” Trudeau said. “Donald, in the eight years you and I have worked together, we have done a great job and we have signed a historic deal that has brought record-breaking work and growth in both of our countries.
“We've done a great job on the world stage, just as Canada and the US have been together for generations for decades, and now we should work together to further enhance the prosperity of North Americans in a very uncertain and challenging world.”
