‘Greenland is ours’: Prime minister responds to Trump

Greenland Prime Minister Moote Brupp Egede again pushed back Trump's proposal that the US had acquired the Arctic Island, claiming early on Wednesday that “Greenland belongs to us.”

Egae condemned Trump's claims in his joint speech to Congress that the US would take over territory that it owns “in a different way” Danish territory, claiming online that the island's residents are neither American nor Danish, Greenlandick reported.

The future of the territory will be determined by its people, he added in a Facebook post. This is written in both Denmark and Greenland.

Trump has doubled in plans to acquire Greenland in recent weeks, claiming it is necessary for national security purposes. In his speech to Congress on Tuesday night, he repeated his thoughts.

“We need Greenland for national and international security, and we're working with all involved to get it,” Trump said. “But it's really necessary for the safety of the international world.”

“And I think we'll get it. In some way, we're going to get it,” he told the crowd.

His comments come a week before the Greenlanders go to vote for the assembly elections, the Associated Press noted.

Officials from both Greenland and Danish have pushed the idea back, claiming the island is not for sale. The president has not ruled out the use of military force to acquire territory, raising international concerns around the time he returned to the White House.

“Greenland belongs to us. We are not for sale, and we are not for sale,” Egede said at the time.

Danish politician Anders Bisten pointed out that the island has been part of the Kingdom of Denmark for 800 years and is an integrated part of the country.

“It's not for sale,” he said. “Let's put it in words you might understand, Mr. Trump: f—off.”

Egede added that he believes Greenlanders don't want to leave Denmark just to become part of America.
