Trump hits Biden repeatedly in address to Congress

President Donald Trump did not shy away from throwing political jabs when he repeatedly denounced former President Joe Biden by delivering his address to a congressional joint session Tuesday night. He even declared Biden to be “the worst president in American history.”

1. “We really needed a new president.”

Naturally, in his speech, Trump has hit Biden's border policies several times, calling it “insanity and extremely dangerous.” Border security is one of his main focuses on the 2024 and 2016 campaign trails, and last night, illegal immigration was notable in a Trump speech.

Trump portrayed a contrast between himself and Biden on the issue, accusing his predecessor of allowing the country to “terrorists,” “murderers,” and “criminals.” This sentiment was particularly strong as the mothers of Rayken Riley and Jocelyn Nungarei were present. Riley and Nungarei were killed on suspicion of illegal immigration.

Trump said the first bill he signed into law was the Rental Riley Act and spoke about its importance. Later in the speech, he revealed an executive order renaming a wildlife shelter in Texas after Nungarei. He spoke about both their deaths and promoted the crackdown on his administration's borders.

One moment during his speech, Trump said that illegal immigrants “chosen not to come” in his words, in contrast to Biden and Democrats who argue that laws are needed to stop the influx of immigrants.

“The Democratic media and our friends kept saying that we needed a new law. “We need laws to ensure borders.” But it turns out that all we really needed was a new president,” Trump said as the room erupted with applause.

2. “Biden has approved more money in this fight than Europe has spent on billions and billions of dollars.”

After last week's tense, oval office, Kelfahl, including Ukrainian President Voldy Mie Zelensky, Trump, and Vice President JD Vance, how the president deals with the Ukrainian crisis was at the pinnacle of lawmakers' minds.

Trump repeatedly accused Biden of sending billions of aid to help Ukraine fight Russia. Trump responded immediately, asking if he wanted to continue “for another five years.” He then humiliated Senator Elizabeth Warren to D-Mass and said he wanted to see the war continue.

Trump said the US, which spent more than Europe went to defend Ukraine despite the oceans being far apart, is unfair that the US spent more than Europe did. He also denounced Biden for not trying to “equal” spending at least in line with the contributions of the US.

In his speech, Trump said he received a letter from Zelensky earlier that day indicating that Ukraine is “ready to come to the negotiation table” and “producing lasting peace.” Trump praised Zelensky for the letter, doubled his call for peace negotiations by saying, “If you want to end the war, you have to talk to both sides.”

3. “We've ended our weaponized government.”

Trump said he has put an end to the government's weaponization, referring to multiple lawsuits that demanded him spend days in court during his 2024 campaign. He held the Biden administration responsible for these legitimate fights.

“And we have ended the weaponised government, where, by example, we are allowed to viciously prosecute political opponents like me,” Trump said. The crowd responded strongly to the statement, urging Trump to turn to Democrats and ask, “How did that work?”

Trump has long argued that many legal cases open to him are politically motivated. He also called for an end to the weaponization of law enforcement against political opponents, and once again used himself as an example.

4. “But he lifted his finger up” helps Mark Vogel

Mark Vogel, a history teacher who was detained in Russia in August 2021, and his mother were guests in the joint session. Trump recalled how he promised Fogel's 95-year-old mother Malphine when his son was released that he would be released just before he took the stage at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Shortly after making that promise, Trump was nearly killed when a gunman fired in the rally. Corey Comparatore, whose family was in the joint session, was killed in the attack, but Trump was shot dead in the ear at the time, and two others were injured.

Trump has accused the Biden administration of not doing anything more to secure Fogel's release after being arrested for 14 years in prison and sentenced to prison. The president said the Biden administration “barely got it” Vogel, who was released from Russia last month.

5.

One of Trump's signature issues during the 2024 campaign, the economy, also appeared at his address. Trump criticised Biden's economic policies and set out his plans to combat inflation.

Trump blamed Biden's previous policies for rising egg prices, saying he “goes out of control.” Trump appeared to be focusing on eggs for a while while staring at Democrats who reportedly planned to use eggs and empty egg cartons as protest props during his speech, According to Axios.

He also addressed energy prices and said the reduction in new oil and gas leases by the previous administration were a major contributor to rising prices and inflation. After that, Trump promised to chase “liquid gold at our feet” and “drills, babes, drills.”

In addition to eggs and energy, Trump pointed to government spending as a source of inflation. He read a long list of findings from the government's Office of Efficiency (DOGE) and said it was simply “a portion of the horrifying waste.” At one point, while reading the list, Trump paused and confirmed, “This is true.”

6. “We've finished a new scam with ridiculous green.”

Despite trying to distance himself from “The Green New Deal,” known as “The Green New Scam,” in 2020, Biden placed a major emphasis on climate policy in his administration. In 2022 he signed the Inflation Reduction Act, which includes the biggest investment in climate policy in US history.

But Trump used Biden's climate change policy as a point to beat his predecessor.

“We've finished all of Biden's environmental restrictions that made our country far less secure and completely out of hand, and importantly, we've finished our last administration's insane electric vehicle mission,” Trump said.

He went on to end the “new, stupid green scam” and withdraw what is known as the “Paris Agreement.” Trump has repeatedly taken his stance that the US is paying too much in the Paris Agreement, but other countries are “not paying.”
