Terrorism spreading across the globe, research group finds

According to a new report from the Global Terrorism Index (GTI), terrorism continues to spread around the world, and in 2024 it was more common in the West than ever before.

GTI released its 2025 report on Wednesday, finding that the number of countries that recorded terrorist attacks rose from 58 in 2023 to 66 last year. This reverses nearly a decade of improvement to the issue, GTI said.

In the West, 93% of deadly attacks were carried out by lonely wolf terrorists.

“Today, the majority of Western attacks are carried out by individuals who are not affiliated with formal groups that are radicalised through social media, gaming platforms and encrypted messaging apps,” GTI said in the report.
