Hayden Haynes, chief of staff for Louisiana Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson, was arrested Tuesday night for allegedly intoxicated in Washington, D.C.
Two law enforcement agencies said NBC News Haynes drove into the Capitol shortly before midnight. Johnson's office confirmed the incident with the news outlet.
“Speakers have known Hayden for nearly a decade and have worked closely together.”
One source said Haynes was arrested and released on a quote to appear in court. Haynes' court will be “in the coming weeks,” according to Capitol Police. New York Times It has been reported.
The Capitol Police said the driver returned to the parked vehicle around 11:40pm last night.
“We responded and arrested for the DUI,” police said.
When asked by NBC News if he was planning to stand up to his Chief of Staff, Johnson said, “I have known Hayden Haynes for over a decade and have worked with him. He is trusted and respected, and he has my full faith and confidence.”
Johnson spokesman Taylor Haussy repeated the speaker's comments.
“The speaker recognizes the encounter that occurred last night involving his Chief of Staff and the Capitol. The chairman has worked closely with Hayden for nearly a decade and trusts him to serve as chief of his staff throughout his tenure in Congress,” Haulsee said.
Haynes, a Louisiana native, managed Johnson's 2016 campaign, joined his office in 2017 and became Chief of Staff in October 2023. Fox News Digital It has been reported.
The arrest reportedly came after President Donald Trump's speech to the Congressional joint session. In Trump's speech, Johnson sat behind the president and at one point eliminated Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) due to his repeated explosions and destructive actions.
