The 49ers are stepping into the competition with Joey Bosa's free agency rush.
San Francisco — Nick spent his entire NFL career on the defensive side — is an option for Joey after the veteran passing rush was cut by the Charger after nine years of running on Thursday. According to the NFL network.
Their mom, Cheryl Bosa, was everything to the brothers buy in the Bay after they didn't play together since high school.
Joining Instagram Stories on Thursday, Cheryl said, “I reposted a fan-made video. [Joey Bosa] To the bay. ”
Cheryl was tagged in the video and showed pictures of Nick and Joey, now 27, over the years.
The brothers didn't get the chance to play each other in Ohio State. Before Nick's freshman season in 2016, Joey left for the NFL three years later.
Joey was a senior, and Nick was a freshman at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale when he played together in 2012.
With Joey's release, the charger has saved $25.36 million in cap space.
“I couldn't be more proud than my son, Joey,” Sheryl wrote in her Instagram story.
Joey is a five-time Pro Bowler and a defensive rookie of the year in 2016 – suffered from injuries after signing a five-year, $135 million contract extension with Los Angeles in 2020.
In 2024, he played 14 games in five bags (the most since 2021) and was named the fifth Pro Bowl.
Considered one of the best chargers to date, Joey ranks second in franchise history with the 72 career sacks behind Leslie O'Neill (105.5).
Joey spent the first nine seasons of his career with the Chargers after picking him on his third overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.
Nick, the second overall pick by the 49ers in the 2019 NFL Draft, won five Pro Bowl nods and all Pro selections for the first team in 2022.
Nick was a defensive rookie in 2019 and a defensive player in 2022.
As of Thursday, Joey hasn't said where he likes to take away his talent in his first NFL free agency.
Earlier this offseason, Nick discussed the possibility of teaming up with his brother.
“At some point it would be cool.” Nick told ESPN Last June. “I always thought I was the one who would play here and retire here. I don't think that a lot of people do it on one team. I think it's cool to achieve, but you never know.”
