The Sesame Workshop will be “slightly reduced” due to ongoing layoffs, said President and CEO Shelley Rollins Westin on Wednesday.
The Westin announced the layoffs in a shared letter to staff on Wednesday, expressing his gratitude for all his past contributions.
“Unfortunately, the Sesame Workshop is unsuppressed by the current economic challenges that are inherent in the dramatically changing media situation,” she said. “Combined with the end of the current distribution agreement and policy changes affecting federal funds, we are facing a complete storm. These factors, among other things, have left an important budget gap that we have to resolve as we head into the next fiscal year.”
“We have to make a massive reduction in what we hope will be a temporary change in benefits and bonus programs, given that our biggest single expense is people and benefits,” she added. “These changes are necessary to ensure that the workshop is ready to continue to provide its mission for years to come, but that doesn't make the human impact of these declines much painful.”
She concluded with her promise to ensure that the Sesame Workshop will be “for children and families for decades to come.”
