Current Governor Gavin Newsom (D-Calif) cannot be executed again due to time limits as the next election will take place in 2026. Candidates must submit documents that run ahead of the Primary on June 2, 2026.

According to CBS Newssomeone nearby Harris told the outlet he was “seriously considering” the governor's run. However, if she is running for governor, that would likely mean that she will not run for president in 2028.

Meanwhile, previous reports showed that the former vice president told her close aides to keep all options at the table regarding her political future after being overwhelmingly defeated by President Donald Trump.

Additionally, while there are expected to be a large number of candidates to replace Newsom, Harris' entry into the race could potentially prevent other potential Democratic candidates from starting their own bids.

After his defeat by Trump in November, Harris was mostly in the spotlight. As of January, multiple sources report that she hopes she will tackle a book about her time and interest in food and cooking in politics.

In the California primary, all job candidates are listed on the ballot, with the top two voters moving on to the general election regardless of party.
