House Speaker Mike Johnson on Saturday announced a short-term funding bill that will be funded by federal agencies by September to avoid looming government shutdowns.
Page 99 ''Continuous year-round extension of expenditures Act 2025''It includes plans for higher spending for defense programming, but reduces de-evacuation funds.
Johnson's measures will allow for approximately $892.5 billion in defense spending and approximately $708 billion in de-evacuation spending. Defence spending is slightly above the previous year's level, but de-evacuation is below about 8%.
The bill does not include funding requested by individual lawmakers for thousands of community projects across the country and programs such as Social Security and Medicare.
Johnson (R-LA) hopes to raise the bill for voting Tuesday. Republicans only have a narrow 218-214 majority, so democratic support may be needed to pass the resolution.
Democrats oppose what Johnson called a “clean” resolution, but refusing this measure puts the nation at risk of partial government shutdowns. Congress must act by midnight on Friday.
House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries warned Republicans on Friday that Democrats would not support a bill stripping of funds for health care, telling them “Medicaid is our redline.”
“Republicans have decided to introduce a continuing partisan resolution by the end of the current fiscal year that threatens to cut funds for healthcare, nutrition assistance and veteran benefits,” Jeffries wrote in a letter Friday to “Dear Colleague.” “That's not acceptable.”
Johnson was fired Saturday, accusing Democrats of not getting “sarcasm.”
“They love reminding Americans of the dangers of government shutdowns. But they are against the clean CR that keeps the government open.” He wrote to X.
President Trump has also shown support for the bill, urging Republicans to meet on Saturday, allowing them to push the bill through without Democrats' support.
“The House and Senate have put together a very good funding bill (“CR”) under the circumstances! All Republicans need to vote next week (please!) Yes. Something wonderful has come to America. We are asking you to give us months to deliver us in September. I said it in the Truth Social Post.
“The Democrats will do everything they can to shut down our government, and we cannot let it happen. We must continue to unite for another day when the timing is right – no objection. It's very important. Make America great again!”
