Angel Reese, Dijonai Carrington lash out at fans over appearance comments

WNBA players Angel Reese and Dehonai Carrington spoke out about the criticisms that new fans of the league directed at them during an episode of Reese's podcast “Unapologetically Angel” on Friday.

Both players have been subject to harsh comments by fans after a controversial interaction with Phenom Kate Linklark.

Reese faces criticism for her interaction with Clark, dating back to the 2023 NCAA Women's Basketball Championship Game.

In 2024, Reese and some of her Chicago Sky teammates committed a series of controversial fouls at Clark at four WNBA meetings.

“We pop our S and say what we have to say, especially since two black women don't have an attitude. And I stand up to what we said. I find it really difficult,” Reese said of the criticism she received on Friday's show.

Carrington faced a fierce rebound after giving Clark a black eye with his claws at a playoff meeting with Clark's Indiana Fever and Carrington's former team, Connecticut Sun, in September. Carrington also spoke to Clark and her fan base previously.

“They're really loose in their mouths,” Carrington said of her critics. “They know they think it's a troll, but it's not just a troll. That's the person we see in real life.”

But for Reese and Carrington, some of the comments that bother them the most are about their appearance.

“When people say that, I hate it, 'Oh, she's too worried about her makeup and her hair and her eyelashes and her nails and her clothes,” Reese said.

Carrington said she wasn't bothered when she says people are paying too much attention to her appearance, but when she wonders why she has blonde hair, she says she “hate.”

“I hate people talking about it, like, 'Why do you have blonde hair?',” Carrington said. “I got black eyebrows. I got black arm hair, black legs hair…and I don't care. I'm still a natural blonde.”

Reese has since been criticised for putting too much effort into making players like her and Carrington appear feminine, but some WNBA players have also been criticized for being too masculine.

“They complain and say that WNBA players aren't too feminine and not feminine enough. We're not dressed cute enough. They don't want to see a bunch of little boys running around their coats. Now we're way too many,” Reese said.

“I'm not looking at that WNBA. Masculine, long shorts, they wear braids. They all like each other. They all date each other.” That's not true,” Reese said.

“I haven’t got it, the lease has been added.

Despite these complaints, Reese may have indirectly hinted at her feelings about Clark's appearance. At one point in the interview, Reese listed the WNBA “Bad.” This is urban slang for confident, stylish and attractive people.

“They knew who the villain was. [Carrington]me, Cameron [Brink]Kia [Nurse]”Reese said.

Reese has left Clark off that list.

However, at the time of the episode, Carrington or Reese did not address Clark in any way.
