Former President Joe Biden posted on Saturday on X to celebrate International Women's Day, with many Americans calling for his administration's record to enable transgender athletes to compete in women's sports.
“Like many of you, I am celebrating incredible women in my life today. International Women's Day is the time to recognize the achievements of women and girls everywhere and encourage efforts to promote dignity, opportunity and equality for all. When women and girls succeed, communities, economy and democracy will succeed. Biden wrote.
During Biden's presidency, he signed an executive order allowing trans athletes to compete in women's and girls' sports, attempting to rewrite Title IX to allow it, and punish the state for taking his own steps to combat the issue.
Since Biden resigned, Congressional Democrats and the state government have done enough to combat Republican attempts to address the issue.
There was a wave of criticism on Saturday for his congratulatory post.
Critics included Rep. Brandon Gill of R-Texas. He posted a screenshot of a House of Representatives vote on the protection of women and girls in sports laws that 203 Democrats opposed.
The bill was filibustered in the Senate when 45 Democrats voted against it.
XX-XY Athletics is a sportswear brand dedicated to promoting efforts to protect female athletes from trans-inclusion, and has denounced Biden for “eroding” women's rights.
Other Americans shared their thoughts.
“If a man takes over the space, he won't succeed,” wrote one X user.
Another X user wrote: Are you looking for my sisters and daughters? Or do you even know that you did it? ”
“Hey Joe. What is a woman? Is there a way to celebrate by putting men in female sports? Do you steal the identity of an actual woman?” another user wrote.
Biden's record of allowing trans athletes to compete in women and girls' sports has become one of the Democrats' biggest vulnerabilities in the 2024 election.
Biden signed on the first day of his presidency in January 2021 Presidential Order “We will prevent and fight discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation.”
The order says, “Children should be able to learn without worrying about whether they will be denied access to toilets, locker rooms or school sports.”
In March 2023, Democrats advocated and proposed a Transgender Bill of Rights resolution “We recognize that it is the federal government's obligation to develop and implement the Transgender Bill of Rights.”
The resolution specifically calls for federal law to enable biological men to participate in team sports and gender identity and optimal programs. [and] Use school facilities that match your gender identity. ”
In April 2023, Biden's Department of Education proposed a change in rules that would punish schools to prevent trans athletes from competing in women's sports.
The proposition was titled “Sex-related eligibility criteria for male and female athletic teams based on gender in educational programs or federal financially supported activities.”
The rules would have banned individual states from banning participation in single sex sports by gender identity rather than simply gender.
There are 23 states in the United States that have laws restricting trans athletes from competing as women in public school sports.
In April 2024, Biden issued a Cleaning Title IX Rewrite, which issued a prohibition of “gender” discrimination at schools based on gender identity, sexual orientation, and “pregnancy or related condition.” The rules came into effect on August 1, and for the first time the law stated that discrimination based on gender includes conduct related to a person's gender identity.
It led to more than 20 lawyer generals suing rules, claiming it was inconsistent with some of their state laws that prevent transgender students from participating in women's sports.
The Supreme Court terminated Biden's urgent request in August to enforce a rewrite of a state that refused to be rewritten.
a National exit survey What the US Legislative Action Committee did for women involved found that 70% of moderate voters were “opposed to Donald Trump's transgender boys and men playing girls and women's sports,” and the issues of transgender boys and men using girls and women's bathrooms are important to them.
Additionally, 6% said it was the most important question of all, and 44% said it was “very important.”
After President Donald Trump took office, he signed an executive order on February 5th banning trans athletes in sports, including women and girls.
But many Democrat-led states have refused to comply with the order, despite most Democrats opposed it.
recently New York Times/Ipsos Survey It turns out that the majority of Americans, including the majority of Democrats, do not believe that trans athletes should not be allowed to compete in women's sports.
Of the 2,128 participants, 79% said that biological men identified as women should not be allowed to participate in female sports.
Of the 1,025 identified as Democrats or Democrats they rely on, 67% said trans athletes should not be allowed to compete with women.
