WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The Yankees need to find a pitcher who can pitch this season.
Two spots opened in the Yankees rotation, as the elbow was worried that Gerit Cole himself called “anxiety” after knocking out Lewis Gill for several months.
“That's two big, big parts of our team,” manager Aaron Boone said of Gill and Cole. “There is no sugar coating, it is a blow.
“But it's also a great opportunity for someone else and people we believe in.”
Behind Max Fried, Carlos Rodon and Clark Schmidt are Marcus Stroman, perhaps Will Warren.
The next wave will include veterans at camp on non-roster invitations, Saturday starter, Alan Winans, and prospects such as Sean Boyle and Cam Schlittler.
A solid prospect who debuted without success last season, Warren looked like a new pitcher at camp.
He hit 11 and allowed two hits and one run in eight Grapefruit Tree Gunnings.
“It could be,” Boone said when asked if Warne was the next man before the Yankees lost 5-2 to the Astros at a park in Palm Beach. “I love how he looks and I feel there's no doubt in my mind that he has what it takes to be a successful starting pitcher in this league.
“Is that ready for now? Certainly, he appears to have gotten better over the winter. He's got better this spring, so he put himself in the mix for that conversation.”
If it's not Warren, Carrasco could probably get a rotation spot and a roster location.

The 15th major leaguer encouraged this spring. This spring, the speed of his fastball is marked a little.
If neither of them, Winan might be surprised. The Yankees claimed the correct exemption from the Braves in January, successfully robbing them.
The 29-year-old was a 17-round pick for the Mets in 2018 and was filmed by the Braves in the Minor League Rules 5 draft before the 2022 season. He has appeared in eight major league games against Atlanta over the past two seasons.
The Yankees made two more camp cuts, reassigning Eric Rayselman on the right to minor league camp, and optionalizing Michael Arias on the right to Triple A Scranton/Wilkes Barre.
