Dad of Newark Det. Joseph Azcona mourns loss of hero son

The murdered Newark police father, Joseph Azkona, called the violent death of his hero's son “an indescribable pain” as he choked too much with words on Sunday evening.

Jose Azcona's sentiment was still raw within 48 hours of her 26-year-old son being killed by suspected teen gunman in a fierce gunfight in New Jersey city where he is suffering from crime.

“It's pain – it's an indescribable pain,” Jose, 52, told the Post in a long pause.

“I have no words about pain,” he continued in Spanish. “There are no words. There are no words.”

det. Essex County prosecutors said at a press conference on Saturday that Azkona, who had been with the police for five years, was “shot before he even had the opportunity to leave the police car.”

Officers were declared dead at the hospital early Saturday morning.

The 14-year-old suspect whose name is not public due to his age is said to have pulled the trigger on an automatic weapon.

He is facing murder charges, but experts told the Post Sunday that the defendant murderer cannot be brought to trial as an adult.

Officials say Azkona's partner was also shot dead and injured in a shootout near MacDonald and White Castle at the intersection of MacDonald and White Castle.

Jose Azkona, who was back to work at the Newark Liquor Store on Sunday, said he and his family had to maintain their commitment while they were overcoming the sadness of an unthinkable tragedy.

However, he pointed out that community support is strong in the ugly aftermath.

“It will heal over time, but for now I have no words,” he said. “We will miss him forever.”

The detective's murder expressed anger and sadness across the country, including NYPD commissioner Jessica Tish.

“The whole NYPD laments the loss of @newarknjpolice detective Joseph Azkona,” said the city's top police officer. I wrote it on Saturday.

“Every day, officers breathe life into protecting others. Today, we are painfully reminders of the sacrifices they make.”

Meanwhile, New Jersey PBA President Peter Andreief said in a statement that Azkona's murder is “outrageous and should shock all NJ residents.”

“The fact that a child, about 14 years old, has decided to assassinate a New Jersey official shows a huge number of system failures,” he said.
