ABC 7 NY It has been reported Azkona was inside the police vehicle around 6:30pm, but other officers were “investigating the possibility that a group of individuals had illegal firearms.”
The firefight explodes, allowing Azkona to leave the car and was later hit by a gunshot before he died in the hospital. Another officer was attacked, but his wounds are not considered life-threatening.
A person suspected of shooting a 14-year-old officer was also injured, but is expected to survive. He is currently charged with “crimes involving murder, attempted murder and possession of illegal weapons.”
New York Post It's attracting attention Azcona's uncle Juan G. Lopez has 14-year-old parents blame his nephew's death.
Lopez said, “It's the parents. The way they grew up, the parents.”
Martha Valgas, Azkona's mother, offered another take, saying, “You can blame your parents, but sometimes you can't. You don't know what they're doing. You can't blame them. I don't blame my parents, trust me.”
