Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) argued in CNN's “Situation Room” on Monday that voters would not blame Democrats if the government was shut down.
Co-host Wolf Blitzer said, “But how worried is it that the public will blame the Democrats if the government is shut down?”
Omar said: “Now, the House is controlled by Republicans, the Senate is controlled by Republicans, and the presidency is in the hands of Republicans. So it's their job to make sure the government has the resources it needs to keep functioning. And I think Americans are well aware of that fact, and that's who they blame.”
She continued. “Republicans are willing to negotiate with us, whether it's in the House or Senate. They do this on their own and without negotiation, you don't have a bill that both parties can agree on.”
“But there's the pain that comes when the government closes.”
Omar inserted “severe pain.”
Blitzer continued. “It was especially when all these federal jobs were gone, people were fired, given five minutes of notice, they didn't go home, they wouldn't come back, they couldn't come back. You could imagine what would happen if the government didn't have the money to keep it running.”
“It's going to be so devastating,” Omar said.
