Former Senator Marco Rubio (R-FLA.) is said to have launched a push to hire Bill Belichick at the University of North Carolina by contacting political allies in the region.
Rubio, now Secretary of State under President Donald Trump, was one of the first allies he heard from former New England Patriots manager Bill Belichick about pursuing his position at the University of North Carolina.
Belichick won six Super Bowls in the NFL along with the New England Patriots. He eventually signed a five-year, $50 million contract to become UNC head coach.
However, its path to monumental deals is said to have been rather unorthodox, with some of the highest levels of political strings being pulled.
“It's possible that Belichick will come to Chapel Hill.”
Belichick reportedly reportedly sent the words to his political connections. Rubio is said to have called Sen. Tom Tillis (RN.C.) in the hopes of being able to contact some of his own contacts at the university.
For details ReportESPN spoke with Tillis. Tillis explained that Rubio, a big sports guy, called him to talk about Belichick.
“Rubio followed the world of sports pretty closely, and he called me and said, 'There's a chance Belichick could come to Chapel Hill,'” Tillis told the outlet.
Tillis recalls.”[Rubio] “He wants a school with a high academic reputation and wants to build a programme that will bring them a national championship,” he said. ”
The senator revealed what he told Rubio. [make some calls]. ”
Tillis explained that he quickly got on the wire with North Carolina Senate Speaker, Philberger, Protempore. He reached out to the Senate Speaker for his strong connection at UNC, but Berger reportedly did not take the idea seriously any time soon. Berger is said to have even laughed at Belichick's idea of going to North Carolina.
When approached by ESPN, UNC Prime Minister Lee Roberts was not going to comment on the impact Rubio, Tillis, or Burger might have had.
However, he said he was “really pleased” with the support the school has received “fully” since hiring Belichick.
“We expected the response to be positive, but it was even more overwhelmingly positive than we could have imagined,” he explained. “If we didn't think it was a wise investment, we obviously didn't do it, but it's too early, but we didn't feel good about where we were.”
ESPN claimed that an internal but unnamed source confirmed that “push belichick to the land” was all “derived from actions with politicians.”
Belichick's advance to college football was a surprise to many, but insider reports described his departure from the NFL as quite controversial. Belichick is said to be bored with the owner of the NFL and has even been told he doesn't deserve “being empowered.”
Sources close to the coach said he was “fed up” by what happened to the league.
In January, rumors spread that Belichick was contacted by former star quarterback Tom Brady (now the owner of some of the Las Vegas Raiders), but rumors that the coach would join Brady in Las Vegas have largely died. But at the same time, the NFL season is still far apart, and if it departed by June 1, 2025, Belichick's North Carolina contract reportedly included a $10 million acquisition.
That price tag is something that the NFL team willing to pay for future payments.
