On CNN International's “CNN Newsroom” aired on Tuesday, White House's senior counselor Peter Navarro, a senior counselor in trade and manufacturing, answered questions about the White House, saying that tariffs are about fentanyl and migration, “All of which could be true at the same time. And the current actions regarding Canada, Mexico and China are about fentanyl, and the mutual tariffs on April 2 are about addressing the barriers other countries have, and tariffs also generate revenue.
Host Jim Seite asked: “First, I want to talk about the goals of the trade war, because you called it the war on drugs, the war on border aggression. Trump also spoke about drug trafficking, migration at various times, but do you have a desire to bring work back to the US? What's the goal?”
Navarro replied: “All of these things can be true at the same time. What we have done to Canada, Mexico and China is under what we call IEPA, International. [Emergency] Economic power is the law to deal with emergencies, and the emergency we face is border aggression, which put a huge strain on our economy as it takes wages and takes people's jobs. It leads to robbery, rape and murder of our citizens, and most importantly, to the fentanyl crisis, killing more than 100,000 Americans each year. …So the point is that these tariffs are designed to carry out emergencies. Now, with regard to what comes on April 2nd, mutual tariffs are to address decades of unfair trade issues that are characterized as higher tariffs and tax-free barriers in all major trading partners than the US. ”
Navarro then added that “tariffs will be tax cuts,” adding that it has generated revenue and “already attracting about $2 trillion in investment.” And then he regains his manufacturing job.
