Just a few months ago, Canada's future was clearly visible – conservatives were on the rise. After nearly a decade of power, Justin Trudeau resigned, and his liberal party appeared to be falling. But then came his threat to not only do Donald Trump's tariffs, but Canada would become the “51st state.”
The Canadians were horrified. The government fought back with retaliatory tariffs and strong words. Ordinary Canadians began boycotting goods from the US. Support for the Liberal Party has skyrocketed. Mark Carney, who has never become an MP now, but was the first non-British leader of the Bank of England, was dominated by the role of Prime Minister.
Leyland Secco is a Toronto-based reporter. He explains how the former “Rockstar Banker” has won such overwhelming support from his liberals and why Canadians think he can be someone who can save them from Trump. He tells Hannah Moore why Canadians are worried that tariffs could push the country into a recession and that the rich minerals and resources around the country can draw unnecessary attention from Trump.
But Kearney will have to take the election soon – can he win, and does he have what he needs to take on a strong Canadian neighbor?
