Jets release C.J. Mosley to end injury-plagued tenure

The Jets bid farewell to long-time linebacker CJ Mosley on Wednesday, releasing him six years later with the team.

The move was expected after the 32-year-old Mosley suffered a hernia disc in his neck after battling a toe injury last year, playing four games after finishing the season in October.

Mosley is carrying $16.4 million in dead money.

The Jets were also released over the years of quarterback Aaron Rodgers rep on Wednesday.

The Jets announced last month that they were moving ahead from their four MVPs, reaching a deal with Justin Fields this week, replacing him with quarterback.

The Jets have designated Rogers as a cut after June 1st. That means the $23.5 million salary cap will remain in the Jets books until June.

This year, the money died and 2026 will be reduced to $14 million with $35 million.

Mosley joined the Jets in March 2019 and signed a five-year, $85 million deal.

He only played two games in his first two years with the Jets.

He suffered a nuclear muscle injury in the Bills' first week loss in 2019, returning later in the season, but made it worse.

He then opted out of the 2020 season due to Covid-19 concerns.

Mosley was a four-time pro bowler with the Ravens before coming to the Jets.

His production in New York took off in 2021 when new coach Robert Saleh arrived.

Mosley lost weight and became Sale's defense quarterback.

He played 50 games over the next three seasons and went to the Pro Bowl in 2022.

Last season, Mosley suffered a toe injury against the Titans in Week 2, missing the next three games.

He returned to two games in October, but suffered pain in his neck during his pre-match warm-up before the match in New England in the 8th week.

The doctor found a hernia disc on Mosley's neck and he did not return to the field.

It is unclear whether Mosley will retire or if he will continue playing.

Mosley said at the end of the season he had no idea about resignation and was focused on recovering from a neck injury.

The Jets signed a Mosley replacement, Jamian Sherwood for $45 million this week for three years.
