Port St. Lucy – David Wright was some of the best lineup the Mets have ever had. It includes the 2006 team that reached the NLCS and scored the second run in franchise history.
Still, when he saw this year's team, he added Juan Soto, and Wright said it was “surprising. I wish we could become part of this lineup.”
When he passed this year's roster, Wright noticed some of the same dynamics for the 2006 team, including Carlos Bertran, Jose Reyes, Carlos Delgado and Wright.
This includes not only Soto, but Francisco Lindle, Brandon Nemo and Pete Alonso.
“I'd be happy just to create this lineup,” Wright said with a laugh. “That's formidable.”
“In my opinion, there is a guy who should have probably won the MVP last year. [Lindor]A man who can compete for MVP every year [Soto] The threat of a home run,” Wright said. “It's a deep lineup.”
Asked if it was as good as 2006, Wright said, “I don't know. We were pretty good in 06. There are many similarities: big power first bass man, electric short stop, kind of Juan Sotoish type [of] Carlos Bertran player. ”
An important part of this year's lineup is the ongoing development of Mark Vientos. Mark Vientos first made an impression on the right when Vientos was part of a group of minor leaguers who were asked to speak in the backfield during spring training.
“Vientos was the one who stood out from me,” Wright said of the third baseman. “I really didn't know who these guys were. …I remember being in the backfield at 7am, but I can't say I'm going to make a light bulb. [go off] And he got stuck and asked me a follow-up question. I appreciated that. ”
Most of the Wright chats with the younger players continue to involve more of the game's preparation section than what happens on the field.
Despite his uniform in what he believes is the first time since his retirement in 2018, he thinks it's true again with Wright at camp for a few days.
And he looks forward to seeing Viento become an even better player.
Wright called baseball success “addicted.” If you get a little success, you need it. I want more. That's the position where the mark is included. ”
Wright said he invents problems for himself to improve.
“You can see a lot of that in Mark,” Wright said. “It's a good start, but he wants to be the type of player who wants more and knows he can do. Now it's up to him.”
Wright was also the last encounter to serve as team captain, and he again refused to support his successor, instead praising the leadership skills of Lindor, Nemo, Alonso and Soto.
