Romanian Court Upholds Ban on Georgescu From Presidential Election

The Romanian Constitutional Court has refused to appeal former presidential candidate Karin Georgek's appeal against the ban on candidates in future elections, arguing that it was a humiliation to the democratic process.

In a final and binding decision, the Romanian constitutional court ruled that former presidential candidate Karin Georjuk unanimously rejected 11 appeals launched by the Central Election Bureau (BEC), and banned his candidacy in the May election to ban him from running. ”

Georgescu's appeal alleged that the BEC decision on Sunday included “procedural irregularities” and that the body outsourced its capabilities to the Constitutional Court. Report.

The court was debated in the presidential election last November after Georgek secured a surprising victory in the first round of the vote. Amid allegations that Russia had interfered to support his campaign, the court overturned the election and prevented populist candidates from advancing into the second round.

He is critical of the war in Ukraine and has argued for a better relationship with Moscow, but he denied being a “pro-Russian” and described him as the “first Romania” candidate in line with US President Donald Trump.

“We are people! We are Romania! Thank you,” he added.

Last month, on the way to submit his rescheduled election candidacy, Georgek was arrested and charged with “inciting action against constitutional order,” “false statements,” “starting or establishing an organization with characters of fascist, racist or non-exhibitors.”

The court's move to affirm his ban on running on Tuesday sparked a fresh protest with thousands of supporters gathered in central Bucharest, shouting “freedom” and “thief.”

George Simion, leader of the Romanian Union (AUR), the largest party in the Romanian parliament, criticized the Constitutional Court's decision. write: “Shame! Shame! Shame!”

Simion added: “You will not beat us! Romanians are already awakened! And [Georgescu] I'll win! ”

Another Georgescu Ally, Anamaria Gavrilæ, the leader of Young Party (pot), I said That “some judges have decided, with their conscience, not to let me and millions of other Romanians choose who we really want to be president of the country.”

The criticism also came from overseas with Italian vice-prime minister Matteo Salvini. declare: “This is a Soviet-style Eurocooper, not a democracy. It is a very serious precedent, a dishonorable part of Europe, and you can't go without realizing it.”
