‘These scammers want to scare people’

Law enforcement officials are warning iPhone users about text messages used to steal personal information.

The Hampden County, Massachusetts Sheriff's Office on Tuesday reported certain texts claiming that people were “confirmed investigations,” and that if they do not respond immediately they will face “additional legal action.”

It also includes fake case numbers, phone numbers to call, and a link to listen to voice messages.

Clicking on the link could cause malware to be installed on your device and access your personal information, the sheriff's office warned.

“These scammers want to scare people into acting before they think about it,” Sheriff Nick Kokki said. said in a statement.

Even if the caller ID appears to be from a legitimate agency, it is “highly likely to be spoofed using an internet-based service,” the sheriff's office noted.

“Law enforcement agencies will not send calls, texts or emails to request money, resolve warrants, or carry out official businesses. If you receive a message like this, don't get involved – delete it and report it,” Cocchi says.

This latest scam text creates a sense of urgency and fear, and demands money to take care of legal action, but it is just one of many scams targeting iPhone users.

Earlier this month, iPhone users had received texts telling them to approve payments or contact fraudulent support lines if they were not billed.

If you receive such a message, expert sources recommend that you avoid interacting with the sender and not click on the link.
