Port St. Lucy – Much of the optimism surrounding the Mets' farm system revolves around a few pitchers who may have the opportunity to support this season or the next team.
But it's a prominent positional depth, as Andy Green, senior vice president of player development, evaluates the system compared to when he arrived at the organization about 15 months ago.
Of the Mets' top 20 prospects ranked in the MLB pipeline, 14 are position players. The group includes Jet Williams, Carson Benge, Ryan Clifford, Louis Sanger Aquña, Jesus Baez, Elian Pena, Ronnie Mauricio, Drew Gilbert, Jeremy Rodriguez, Boston Barro, Marco Vargas, Trey Snyder, Nick Morabito and Divern Gutierise.
“I think we're very encouraged on both sides of the ball,” Green said Thursday at Clover Park. “I think last year there was a good step forward because I don't think that's necessarily the case at that point on the offensive side of the ball. I think we're seeing it come out not just our top prospects, but even at a level down.
