Villanova fires Kyle Neptune after three disappointing seasons

One of the top jobs in college basketball has opened up again.

Villanova fired Kyle Neptune on Saturday, two days after the Wildcats were eliminated from the Big East Tournament by UConn in the quarter-finals.

They own a 19-14 overall record and an 11-9 mark at the meeting, and it's very likely they are looking for an NCAA tournament.

If they miss the NCAA Tournament, that means Neptune will end his Villanova tenure without leading the prestigious program to big dance.

He was responsible for three seasons and owned an overall record of 54-47.

The 40-year-old retired in 2022 after responsing for 21 seasons and took over the legendary Jay Wright, who led Villanova to two national championships and four final four appearances.

Neptune was an assistant to Wright's staff before departing for coach Fordham for a season, before returning to take over at Villanova.

“Since coming to Villanova, I have been struck by Kyle's tireless work ethic and dedication to the student-athletes he served,” Eric Roedl, Villanova's vice president and director of track and field, said in a statement. “We are grateful for the long service to Villanova and for his guidance to many excellent young men he coached.”
