On Friday, Carney was sworn in as prime minister after Justin Trudeau resigned.
Trudeau had no top relationship with Trump. However, Carney said his approach was different.
“We respect President Trump. President Trump has some very important issues at the top of his agenda. We understand his agenda,” he told reporters after being sworn in, saying he worked with Trump at an international conference.
“In many ways, some of my experiences overlap with the president's experience. We are both looking for our country. But he knows from a long experience that we can find mutual solutions that will win for both,” he said.
But Carney said Canada would never be “in any way, in shape or form, part of the United States.”
In a farewell message posted on X, Trudeau said: “I am grateful to Canada for trusting me, for giving me the privilege of challenging me and serving the best nations and the best people on the planet.”
