Escaped gorilla rumor addressed by Virginia Zoo officials

Reports say rumors that gorillas were running slowly have prevented the Virginia zoo from resting on residents.

The Virginia zoo lost power Tuesday night, but soon after, rumors began circulating online that the gorilla enclosure had been lifted due to a lack of electricity.

People reported that gorillas were seen in a looser way and lend credit to their assertions.

“I heard about the gorilla that escaped, and I think that was exactly the case. [the zoo’s mascot] Zoosquatch was discovered on his daily run,” the zoo posted on Facebook.

“But don't worry, he's back to the zoo. Our Keeper wants you to know that all of our animals are safe and explained (except for the gorillas… because we don't have them).”

Officials said warnings were issued immediately following the actual escape.

“Friendly reminders. While these hoaxes may be ridiculous, we can rest assured that Virginia Zoo has extensive safety measures and protocols in place to keep animals and communities safe,” the Zoo's Facebook post continued.

“If there is a real animal escape from our facility, a formal statement will be issued by a spokesman on all local media, as well as on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and websites for the safety of our neighbors!”
