Dangelo Russell loves to return to Brooklyn. But does Brooklyn love to get Russell back?
That's a multi-million dollar question.
The veteran point guard heads for unlimited free agency for the first time, but does it in the summer when it's difficult to get cap space.
“To be honest, I don't think it's in my control,” Russell posted on Saturday. “I was on the team before everyone was a free agent. So they have leverage, they have cards. If they decide to bring me back, it's cool. If not, we'll figure it out.”
Russell said he hopes to get back into the net.
“Hope? Yes. (But) I just want to join the NBA,” Russell said before a 115-113 defeat to the Celtics at the Barclays Center. “I don't think I've ever been a free agent. I look back at it, I've never been. For me, it feels strange, but see how it goes. I've signed an extension with the Lakers for two years. I just don't hit (a free agency) so I'm excited to see it.”
The point guard, who had 11 points and eight assists in Saturday's loss, is the final season of a two-year, $36 million deal he signed with the Lakers in 2023.
Brooklyn traded Dorian Finney Smith on December 29th for a three-round second-round draft pick with Russell.
First the net lost its best scorer. They then lost Heartbreaker to the best team in basketball on Saturday.
