Seahawks have a $37.5 million escape hatch in Sam Darnold’s contract

The Seahawks gave the escape patch on Sam Darnold's contract.

Darnold signed a three-year deal worth $105.5 million with the free agency Seahawks after his renaissance season with the Vikings.

However, the Seahawks can leave just a year later with the contract structured way.

From 2025-26, Darnold will make $37.5 million, which is fully guaranteed. According to the pro football story.

According to the report, Darnold received a $27.5 million injury guarantee from 2026-27, with a $17.5 million injury guarantee.

This means that, if they want, the Seahawks can cut Darnold before his second year salary is guaranteed without dead money, as long as Darnold can be healthy and physically pass.

Essentially, if Darnold struggles and the Seahawks want to move on, it could be a one-year $37.5 million deal.

If they don't move on, Darnold will owe $35.5 million from 2027-28, which is not guaranteed.

The contract also reportedly includes $2 million per year for individual performance incentives, $2.5 million per year for playoff performance and $500,000 per year for team performance.

The 27-year-old Darnold broke out in Minnesota last year, threw for 4,319 yards, 35 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while leading the Vikings to a 14-3 regular season record.

However, he struggled with stretching, including a loss of a wildcard round to the Vikings' Rams.

On Thursday, Darnold was officially featured as the Seahawk.

“I think there's an opportunity to do something very special here, but that takes a lot of effort. “I'm very excited to take this one day at a time. That's what I'm trying to do. I'm going to bow my head and go to work.”
