Drones Take Over Fighting in Much of Ukraine War

The incredibly rapid evolution of drone warfare in the Ukrainian War has resulted in some engagement in which almost all of the battles were carried out by autonomous, semi-autonomous machines.

Wall Street Journal (WSJ) Monday Highlighted Amazing December attacks by Ukrainian forces, where none of the Frontlines were human:

The December attack involved unmanned aerial vehicles in December that destroyed the status of Russian status north of Kharkiv, the eastern Ukraine city of Khartyya, according to the forces that carried out the operation, Ukraine's 13th National Guard Brigade. Wall Street Journal I saw video footage of the attack.

The attack served as a proof of concept. There have been issues, but other Ukrainian units are currently planning a similar mission.

There were some dental problems. Land drones in particular suffered from the terrain. And the US-trained brigade said while drones remained essential for combat, excellent leadership, planning and drone operators.

The carefully rehearsed attack began with half a dozen unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), essentially rolling bombs. The drone was piloted by a human operator in first person view mode, like a video game.

UGVs have proven to be a better technical challenge than UAVs as they have to deal with terrain and obstacles, but Ukrainian operations reportedly have reached their targets. Russia The drone has entered into a fight. A machine gun battle was fought between Ukrainian UGVs and Russian UAVs.

The overall operation appears to have at least minimally succeeded in seizing Russia's status and inflicting casualties, but the 13th Brigade and friendly foreign observers were most interested in the attack as a learning experience and proof of concept.

In addition to successfully navigating UGVs over rough terrain, drone operators were able to overcome problems such as electronic clogging and temporary signal loss by including backup drones and signal boosters in their attacking forces. Also, drones were largely managed to avoid interference with each other's signals. This is a major concern when many remote pilot vehicles are deployed at once.

One of the most interesting comments about this operation was from Andri Icopach, a Land drone pilot. Tired it was.

“Ukraine, the US and other countries are working on artificial intelligence programs that include so-called herd technology, which allows aviation drones to coordinate between them. WSJ It's attracting attention.

This is an important factor that pushes autonomous weapons. HyperwallA scenario in which many autonomous drones collide at a speed in which the human mind cannot continue walking. As discovered by Ukrainian drone units, micromanaged numerous pilot drones in the ground and in the air is highly drained.

Autonomous systems with AI adjustments can do so without getting tired or overwhelmed, allowing them to respond more quickly to changes in battlefield situations.

Ukrainian squad interviewed WSJ It may be reasonably seen as one of the most experienced and most experienced drone squadrons in the world today. And managing 50 land and airdro drones with a single coordinated surgery against a small number of Russian targets almost exhausted them. The first army that can transfer control to all AIs with unlimited endurance and lightning reflectivity will gain a great advantage.

There is no doubt that an autonomous drone can see through a computer monitor and overtake the distant human operators who wrestled with joysticks. Parts of Ukraine's new UGV mines weigh literally a tonne. There are self-driving cars with enough armor and firepower to be quickly considered tanks, and sophisticated anti-aircraft weapons are needed to dodge smaller, cheaper packs of UAVs.

The balance of drone warfare is measured between Ukraine and Russia through conflict. Ukraine's Early Benefitswhich obviously surprised the Russian troops, including Turkish-made attack drones launched from pickup trucks, but quickly adapted.

Ukraine may have an edge again at this point. Moscow is furious at the success of Ukrainian “Deep Strike” drones against Russian oil, gas and ammunition storage facilities. The Ukrainian commander says their success is due to careful planning and skilled, skilled human operators, as well as the technical refinement of drones.

“Strikes are morale-friendly, complicating Russia's plans and linking air defenses. They show that Russia is not immortal and cannot attack Ukraine with immunity.” I said Washington Post Thursday.

“However, unlike cruise missiles, most of the drones launched are fired down,” Coffman continued. “The damage they inflicted on Russian infrastructure has not been able to change the dynamics in this war until now, but Moscow definitely wants to stop.”

This could prove to be another incentive for developing hyperwar technology, as a pack of autonomous drones with less need for top-ranked human operators could have a more strategic impact and autonomous defensive drones could be the only effective measure.

Early on Thursday morning, the Ukrainian drones It is reportedly Russian Satarov Oblast's Engels-2 Airbus can cause serious damage. According to Ukrainian intelligence agency, it was one of the war's heaviest drone attacks, potentially compromising or knocking out an air force base essential to Russia's massive aerial attack on Ukrainian cities.

The Ukrainian Security Services (SBU) claimed that Russian air defenses were “ineffective” against the drone herd, causing major accidental damage to civilian structures around the airspace.

Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defense claimed that Russian forces had fired 132 Ukrainian drones overnight, of which 54 were able to shoot them down over Saratov Oblast.

The great fear looms at the hyperwall is that human commanders may not be able to monitor the lightning attacks and defenses made by autonomous herds. The great fear of military planners today is delayed by something like the rapidly changing drone wars fought between Ukraine and Russia, ageing every few weeks.
