Sports world mourns the death of boxing icon George Foreman

The sports community lamented the death of boxing legend George Foreman on Friday night.

Foreman's family announced tragic news on Instagram.

“Our hearts are broken,” the caption read in the post. “In deep sadness, we announce the death of our beloved George Edward Foreman Sr., on March 21, 2025, surrounded by our loved ones.

Many prominent members of the sports world joined social media to pay tribute to Foreman on the news that the International Boxing Hall of Famer had passed away at the age of 76.

“It means dol to George Foreman's family. Mike Tyson posted on X Follow the news.

World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman posted on X to pay homage to Foreman and his family.

“To receive sad news is a moment when you stick to your memory for life. The great George Foreman has passed away.” Posted by Slaiman. “The legendary boxing champion, life-changing preacher, husband, father, grand grandfather, and best friend you can have. His memory is eternal and Big George may rest in peace.”

Slyman then posted a photo of himself presenting his WBC Greenbelt to Foreman, saying he was “honored” to do so.

Outside of boxing, figures from other major sports also recall Foreman's legacy.

“Resting in Peace, George Forman,” NBA Hall of Fame Scottie Pippen posted on X. “Your legacy lives on, champion.”

We also discussed CBS Sports. Foreman's death during March Madness airing, Charles Barkley opened up to his relationship with Foreman.

“In all of the boxing matches, I've come to know a bit that Foreman saw him a bit,” Berkley said, fighting back tears. “I have always chosen his brain about trying to become an entrepreneur when your career is over.

“This hurts, man, I'm not going to lie,” Berkley said. “It was a tough week between him, Junior Bridgeman, Oliver Miller and now Foreman.”

Other stars from outside of track and field have also appeared, paying homage to the two-time heavyweight boxing champions.

“Big George. Love Your Champion,” longtime hip-hop artist ll Cool J posted on Foreman's passing.

Two Emmy Award winners William Shatner also took him to X. To pay his respects.

Both Shatner and Foreman appeared on NBC's reality television show “Better Late Than Never” and aired in 2016-18.

“Pathetic Dol's meanness towards George Foreman's family,” the actor wrote.
