New Indiana Fever acquisition could play an underrated role in championship pursuits

The latest addition to the heat, Brianna Turnerarrived in Indiana last week and spoke honestly about what she thinks she can bring to the organization in pursuit of a championship. Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell and Aliya Boston are at the forefront of fever, but the surrounding rotation players could potentially promote Indiana to the title.

“I think I'm a calm person,” Turner said according to Fever. “I feel like I'm never going to get too high or too low, but I'm also competitive. I like running on the floor and playing defense.

The elite defender can instantly boost Fever's defenses ranked near the bottom of the league last season. That defense is expected to improve this year. Dewanna Bonner Natasha Howard joins the free agency roster. New fever head coach Stephanie White also brings a strong defensive mindset. Her Connecticut Sun team was regularly defended near the top of the league.

Turner from 6'3 Power Forward was twice designated by the WNBA All-Defensive First Team (2020 and 2021) and was a member of the All-Rookie team in 2019.

She is expected to leave the Indiana bench, but even so, her defensiveness should increase her fever when she pursues the championship.

How Brianna Turner came here

The 28-year-old veteran recently played for Chicago Sky where he left the bench and averaged 9.4 minutes per game. Before that, she spent five years at Phoenix Mercury. There, she was a starter for most of her career.

In her career, Turner averaged 4.6 points and 6.3 rebounds on shooting 58.3% in 24.6 minutes per game. She was a free agent this winter and chose to sign a one-year, $85,000 contract that had already added key pieces after her first postseason appearance in seven years.

Last week, Turn arrived in Indianapolis, and Fever quickly released footage of Turner working out with Clark.

Where Indiana Fever enters next season

Indiana came out of the 20-20 season, when he saw the playoffs for the first time since 2016.

This offseason, Indiana added a veteran guard Sydney Colson via free agency from the Ace in Las Vegas, via free agency from the Connecticut Sun, via Natasha Howard via free agency from the Dallas Wings, and Sophie Cunningham via trade from Phoenix Mercury.

“The front office and staff were really visionary,” Turner said. “And I felt I could really complement their vision.”
