Former U.S. Attorney Jessica Aber dies at age 43: authorities

The former US lawyer was found to have died in Virginia on Saturday morning.

Jessica D. Abber, 43, worked as a US lawyer for the Eastern District of Virginia from 2021 to 2025. He was appointed by former President Joe Biden and served in the role until he resigned on January 20th.

In a news release on Saturday, the Alexandria Police Station (APD) confirmed Aber's death and reported that she received a call about a “unresponsive woman” around 9:18am on Saturday.

“As a matter of protocol, there is an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death,” APD said in a statement. “The Virginia Chief Medical Inspector's office will determine the cause and method of death.”

According to Aber's Department of Justice Biography, she graduated from William and Mary Law School in 2006. Her role was involved.”[leading] staff of approximately 300 prosecutors, civil litigation and support personnel in four divisions in the Alexandria, Richmond, Norfolk and Newport news. ”

In her statement of resignation, Abber said it was “an immeasurable honor” to work as a US lawyer.

“I am deeply grateful to Senators Mark Warner and Senator Tim Kane and President Biden for their opportunity to lead this office and to Attorney General Garland for his unwavering leader,” Abber said at the time. “I am proud of the work I have done with federal, state and local law enforcement partners to enforce the law and build community trust.”

Aber's successor, U.S. lawyer Eric S. Shebert, said she was “more than words and heartbroken” to hear Aber's death on Saturday.

“She is unparalleled as a leader, leader and prosecutor, and she is simply irreplaceable as a human being,” Sheebert said. “We continue to be in awe of how much she achieved in this world in such a brief time.

“Each of us in the Eastern Region of Virginia will look to her example and strive to meet that standard,” the lawyer said.

“Jess was a Virginian I've been proud of from high school to college and throughout her career,” Sheebert said. “She loved Edova, and Edova loved her back. We are committed to her life's work, her commitment to seeking justice the way she wanted it.”
