Texas fires Rodney Terry, hires Xavier’s Sean Miller after March Madness loss

Texas must have liked what it saw.

The Longhorns fired coach Rodney Terry on Sunday after Xavier eliminated the Longhorns from the first four March Mardness 2025.

They then hired Xavier's director Sean Miller.

The 56-year-old Miller led Xavier for three seasons, including two NCAA tournament appearances.

After the 11th-seeded musket's first four wins in Texas, they lost to 86-73 sixth-seeded Illinois in the first round.

Miller scored an overall record of 185-87 for Xavier.

He led Xavier to a sweet 16 appearance in his first season in charge, but missed his sophomore tournament and past the first round of the year.

Xavier's second stint as head coach led Arizona 12 seasons after acquiring the team's coach from 2004-09.

Due to recruitment violations and academic misconduct, he returned to Xavier after being fired by Arizona in 2021.

Terry, 56, had been in charge for three seasons in Texas.

After Chris Beard was suspended and then led Texas to the Big 12 Tournament title and ran to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament, he took over for the 2022-23 season.

However, he has not achieved the same success in the past two seasons.

They lost in the second round of last year's NCAA Tournament, scraping it off as one of the final teams on the field this year, forcing them to pass the first four.

That's where they lose to Xavier (86-80) and end the season in disappointment.

He marked the end of his second stint in Texas, previously serving as an assistant from 2002-11 before set out to get a head coaching job at Fresno State in 2011-18.

He coached UTEP from 2018-21 before returning to Texas on the Beard staff.

He leaves with a 62-37 overall record for the Longhorns.
