Maryland’s March Madness buzzer beater turns into travel controversy

For the most dramatic moments of March's madness, you may need an asterisk next to it.

Maryland big man Derrick Queen hit an incredible shot as time ran out to seal Colorado State's 72-71 victory in a thrilling round of 32 games.

It shows he traveled through the play as he drove to the left and placed the ball out of the glass.

CBS Sports Matt Nolander He spoke to “veteran officials” and said he confirmed that the Queen “absolutely traveled with this shot.”

Queen took a step and then grabbed the ball, removed the ball and left before re-gaining the shot with her right hand for the buzzer beater and handed it to the bank.

After the game, Colorado coach Nico Medved laughed when asked by a reporter to respond, “I have time and a day.”

“I haven't seen the video yet, and I'm sure it'll be difficult to watch,” Medved said after the match. “Maybe it wasn't, but that didn't matter and they didn't call it.”

Medved added that Queen “made a really difficult shot.”

At the post-match show, CBS rules analyst Gene Steatore said the key was whether the queens were fully owned when they were taking those steps.

“We don't jump off the screen as big,” Stellatore said when asked about his alleged travel.

Charles Barkley seemed particularly upset by this, saying he received 13 text messages from a friend who spoke about the no-travel call from the referee.

Maryland's generous non-whist brings a painful defeat for the Terrapin's sweet 16 berth and the Rams. The Rams will return home after a red-hot to end the season, which won 22 of their final 23 games.
