Islanders blast ‘f–king embarrassing’ late goalie interference call in shootout loss

All year round, islanders have been troubled by the way goaltender interference is called.

On Monday night they were furious.

On Monday night they saw the regulation victory turn into a shootout loss in one of the most suspicious calls of the season. Kyle Palmieri's game winner was rolled out with 8.9 seconds left in regulation.

“I think it was embarrassing,” Palmieri said. “I couldn't disagree with Cole any more.”

“I don't think anyone in this room would agree to this decision,” Alexander Romanov told the Post.

Coach Patrick Roy overturned calls on the ice, calling the NHL situation room in Toronto “fearing.”

“Palmieri was out of the crease and he turned it over. I think he's their goalkeeper. [Elvis Merzlikins] I pushed him away at the same time,” Roy said. “That's how I see it. If Toronto is afraid that it will overturn a call the referee has made, then you don't need Toronto.”

There are many reasons why the islanders lost this game. From their corrupt power plays to pull back momentum towards Columbus, to Roy's strange decision to lead the shootout with Anthony Duclair, who quickly fanned the pack, to Packus' strange decision, they regained momentum.

But if the islanders miss the playoffs on points and the islanders, rangers, Canadians and blue jackets are separated two points away after Monday night, that's not a possible remote possibility.

The judge quickly swayed Palmieri's goals. This is odd at first when it comes to tight goalkeeper interference calls.

Palmieri said referee Michael Markovich told him there was a contact that began in the crease as an explanation.

“I think goalkeepers will take five minutes to get a reset and need to prepare their shots,” Palmieri said. “It looked like that [Markovic] I couldn't wait to shake it off. ”

Before the fiasco at the end of the regulations, the islanders had already made a pair of leads atop Yakety for a power play in the already terrible straits.

They built an early 2-0 lead and didn't give the Blue Jacket a quarter 5-5, but things started to happen as soon as Damon Severson was called to trip over Bo Horvat early in the second.

Columbus easily killed the penalty, and the islanders' disadvantage suddenly reached the power of chance. Shortly afterwards, Adam Fantilli cut the lead in half with a goal from rush.

The second power play got worse, with Boone Jenner tied the game from a short handle rush at the second 17:13. Anders Lee brought the Islanders back 3-2 shortly after the match returned to even stronger, but damage occurred and the door was opened.

“We didn't do a good job getting into the zone. We didn't do a good job releasing the pressure when we had the pack. And we didn't do a good job competing for it. And we didn't do a good job looking at our options.” “That's it.”

Even the 5-5, which the islanders had absolute control before, they spent passive in the third term, pushing their heels in, and inevitably Kiril Markenko tied the game in three.

After Palmieri's goal was cancelled, both teams traded opportunities in overtime before Fantilli scored the only goal in the shootout to seal Columbus' victory.

Quietly, it now allows the islanders three times in a row, three times in a row, to the game they led to a third overtime.

“We stopped playing in their zone,” Roy said. “We stopped keeping things simple, quickly on the wall, bringing the pack [up ice]. So we lost a lot of fights. ”

Despite this, Roy said he felt the islanders deserved to win.

The immediate damage in the ranking is not enormous. They are currently tied to Rangers and the Rangers behind Montreal at Point, but the Canadians have a match. However, the islanders who have won postseason berths in games 81 and 82 over the past two seasons know that every point is most important.

“I don't know what to say anymore,” Roy said. “If you were outside the crease, I always thought it was where it was, and that's it.

“Are you telling me? [Juraj] Slafkovsky goal [where the Islanders lost a challenge on Thursday] Wasn't it worse than what I saw tonight? ”
