Former Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele criticized Commerce’s Howard Lutnick following comments made by his mother-in-law, who claimed he would “call and complain” if his Social Security check had not arrived.
During an interview on MSNBC’s “The Weekend,” Steele pointed out that billionaire businessman Lutnick is in a privileged position to assist his parents if the government fails to deliver payments.
“If your mom contacts you, what will you do? You’ll just send her a check. But what about mothers who lack a contact to help fund their accounts, are you being insensitive?” Steele remarked.
“Your mom won’t stress because if you’re a good son, you’ll manage that month’s expenses. Yet many mothers don’t have that support,” Steele continued.
Steele became even bolder, labeling Lutnick as “arrogant” and urged him to engage with communities that lack adequate resources.
“This is America today. This arrogance is glaring. They perceive you and think, ‘Missing a payment isn’t an issue for you. You can sustain your family without financial assistance.’
“You’re an aloof, haughty individual,” he added.
Lutnick faced significant backlash after stating on a podcast that his stepmother wouldn’t be overly concerned if her Social Security check didn’t arrive, saying, “She’s probably thinking something must have gone wrong, but I’ll receive it next month.”
“Anyone involved in the payment services and procedures knows the simplest method to reveal a scammer is to pause payments and observe. ‘My stepmother hasn’t reached out; come on, your elderly parents trust the system,’” he added.
Lutnick’s comments come after tech billionaire Elon Musk was appointed by President Trump to enhance government efficiency.
This conversation has sparked backlash from experts and advocates who charge Trump’s associates with disseminating unfounded assertions regarding the actual fraud levels present in the system.
Trump has assured that he will not reduce Social Security benefits.
