College basketball coaching hire grades for men’s Indiana, Texas, Minnesota, Iowa jobs, and more

While the postseason is still ongoing, college sports are the only ones that have a start to the offseason. Men's college basketball feels so much, in a big sense for now, as the 2025 NCAA Tournament trims that field to Sweet 16, while many coaching portals are happening.

The coaching carousel is already in full swing, with some openings already being filled by the power conference team. Will Wade agreed to the deal NC status Hours before his McNeese Cowboys team won the first NCAA tournament game in program history. Texas made an incredible coaching move a few days after being eliminated from the insanity of March, but Indiana and Iowa quickly filled the opening.

Coaching has just begun with boys' college basketball, and there should be a more surprising opening next month. Evaluate recruitment that took place during this first wave and set early expectations for coaches with new programs ahead.

Daryan Debris Indiana Grade is hired

Coaching Indiana Hoosiers It should be one of the best jobs in college basketball. Indiana has tradition, deep pockets and a ferocious fanbase. Anyone who can bring Hoosiers back to glory will become an icon for Bloomington Forever, but after more than 20 years of disappointment, that's easier than that.

Indiana's home run employment never happened. The decision is to hire Darian Debris. Debris can get results. He played three NCAA tournaments in his final four seasons with Drake in the One-Bid League. He should have made a tournament this year in his first season in West Virginia, but was ruined by the selection committee. The good thing about hiring Devries is that he's already coming with a star player. His son Tucker Devries is to chase his father to Indiana for his sixth season of college basketball. He is the type of big wing shooter that Indiana has desperately needed for the past few years.

The minimum tenure for Devries should host an NCAA tournament every year. I think he can do that with the resources he has in Indiana. When he has never won an NCAA tournament game, it is difficult to predict a great success, but much of it can be attributed to the randomness of March. Even if you're still a little overwhelmed, this feels like a ok employment.

Ben McCollum Rental's Iowa Grade

After 15 years of tenure, it's strange to see someone other than Fran McCaffery on the Iowa men's basketball sidelines. New Hire Ben McCollum spent 15 years coaching the Dii Northwest Missouri state before engaging one great season in the Big Ten job with Drake.

Northwest, Missouri, was a great power under McCollum, with four DII national championships. All Drakes will be 31-4 in his first season, winning the NCAA Tournament Games in Missouri. The big question for the start of McCollum's tenure is whether he can convince star point guard Bennett Stirtz to join Iowa City. Stirtz is a stud from McCollum in northwestern Missouri, transforming into the nation's best midsize player at Drake. He really has an interest in the NBA Draft and can start a massive bid war when he returns to college and tests the market.

Hiring a DII coach for a one-year DI experience with Big Ten work is risky. If McCollum brings Stirtz with him, Iowa can compete for spots in the NCAA tournament next season. Even if they don't, the Hawkeyes should be patient with McCollum. Because his system has great results. This feels like a high-risk, highly-paid employment, but for Iowa, I love it.

Willway Drental NC State Grade

When was Wade fired? LSU In 2022, college basketball was a completely different landscape. Wade was like that Canned food for connections with sports' fundamental FBI investigationsand over the past two years he reconstructed his reputation with McNees. So this year he led the program to its first NCAA Tournament victory over Clemson, winning an astonishing victory this year.

Wade's “strong butt offer” is completely legal these days. NC states need to have plenty of resources to build competitors in the weak ACC away from the shocking 4-run of 2023. Wade has proven that he can acquire talent at a lower level, and he makes them buy into a defense first system that relies heavily on athleticism and switching principles. I trust he gets talent and I trust him to coach it.

Wolfpack should slowly be the top five program in ACC, if you have the resources. Other programs like Indiana may have been scared of Wade's baggage, but those worries should be buried in the past. Wade will finish the job and provide both high floors and high ceilings for future NC conditions.

Shawn Miller Rental Texas Grade

Poor Xavier has seen Sean Miller leave twice. The last time Miller landed a five-star recruit and regularly made the second weekend of the tournament in Arizona. If the Wildcats weren't caught up in the old FBI investigation, he might still be in Tucson.

Miller will have elite resources in Texas, just like he did in Arizona. The Longhorns, from Kevin Durant to Tre Johnson, had no problems with McDonald's national landing. Miller has played defense at a high level and has Xavier get three far more than this season.

Texas is always considered a titan sleeping in basketball. Miller may not be a home run employment at this stage of his career, but he is still a good choice for years with coaching remaining at 56.

Virginia Grade for Ryan Odom Rental

Ryan Odom gave Virginia the biggest embarrassment to college basketball history when he led No. 16 seed UMBC in 2018 with the Cavaliers' No. 1 seed.

Virginia is still caught up in the wake of Tony Bennett's surprise retirement before the season. There was a reason Bennett hung it at age 55. He didn't believe Virginia could maintain impressive results in a new era of college basketball, where money is king. Will Odom get better resources than Bennett had at the end of his tenure? Otherwise, it would be difficult to get better results, but the ACC is down, allowing for upward mobility.

Odom knows how to coach. He won Utah State in the tournament in a row before performing big dance in two of his three seasons at VCU. He is known for recruiting international players, and if Virginia cannot win the bidding war for the best relocation, it could once again be a great help. Everyone will struggle to struggle to reach Bennett's legacy, but Odom will make him think that he has been successful everywhere ever and that he will understand it in some way.

Minnesota Grade by Nico Medbed Rental

Men's basketball in Minnesota is never an easy job, but it feels like the program has done the best job at Nico Medbed. The Minneapolis native graduated from school in 1997 and has since built his resume as one of the best mid-major coaches in the sport.

Medved has created NCAA tournaments in Colorado over the past four years, where he has produced professionals such as David Rody and Nike Clifford. Medved finally won his first NCAA tournament. He should have something else, if not for the Derik Queen buzzer beater for Maryland.

Medved's attack set was beautiful to watch in the best of Colorado. He's making tough jumps in front of him trying to compete in the Big Ten, but if anyone can do that in Minnesota, it feels like he is.
