House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-ny) calls for Defense Secretary Pete Hegses to be fired Atlantic OceanJeffrey Goldberg revealed that military strikes against the Hoosis were accidentally added to a signaling group chat with Trump administration officials, where the strike was discussed just days before the strike occurred.
With a letter address On Tuesday to President Donald Trump, Jeffries explained that Hegses was the “most unqualified secretary of defense” in US history. Jeffries accused Hegses of “reckless and casually” disclosing “a highly sensitive war plan,” adding that it “is likely risked America's life and violated the law.”
“Pete Hegses is the most unqualified secretary of defense in American history,” Jeffries wrote in his letter. “His ongoing presence in the top position of leadership at the Pentagon threatens the security of the country and places our brave men and women in uniforms around the world.”
“The so-called Secretary of Defense recklessly and casually disclosed highly sensitive war plans, including the timing of pending attacks, possible strike targets, and weapons used. “His actions shocked our conscience, risked America's lives, and possibly violated the law.”
“Defense Secretary Pete Hegses should be fired immediately,” Jeffries added.
A letter from Jeffries comes after national security adviser Michael Waltz was told he had created a group chat on Signal, an encrypted messaging app. Atlantic Ocean.
According to Atlantic Oceanmembers included in the group chat entitled “Houthi PC Small Group” include Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Vice President J.D. Vance, Director of National Intelligence, Director of Tulsi Gabbard, Special Envoy to Steve Witkov, Trump's Middle Eastern East, and Hegzes.
In group chat, Waltz sent a message to group members informing them that they were “putting together a Chief Chief Tiger team at the delegate/agent staff level,” and continued to ask the team to “provide the best staff POC.”
The message from “Michael Waltz” to the group reads as follows: “Team – Establishing principles [sic] Groups for Houthis coordination, especially for the next 72 hours. My assistant director, Alex Wong, has gathered a delegate/agent chief level tiger team who followed up from a sitroom meeting for action items this morning, and I'll send it out late tonight. ”
The message continued. “PLS will provide the best staff POC from our team to coordinate over the next few days and weekends. THX.”
Goldberg wrote that it was reportedly shared the names of people that group chat members have designated as contacts. Goldberg adds that “things have become even more strange” on Friday, March 14th.
At this point, an attractive policy debate began. An account labeled “JD Vance” responded at 8:16. (Vance was certainly in Michigan that day.) The Vance account states, “3% of US trade is carried out through Suez. 40% of European trade is at the real risk that the public doesn't understand this or why it is necessary.”
The Vance account continues to make noteworthy statements, given that the Vice President has not deviated publicly from Trump's position on virtually any issues. “I don't know how inconsistent this is with his message in Europe right now. There is an additional risk that there will be a medium to severe surge in oil prices. I am willing to support the team's consensus and maintain these concerns for myself.
Joe Kent, who was previously chosen to serve as director of the National Counterterrorism Center, added that “there is no time to drive the timeline,” and that “there are exactly the same options in a month,” but Hegseth reportedly understands Vance's concerns, but that “messaging will be difficult.”
I received a message from my Pete Hegseth account at 8:27. “VP: I understand your concerns – and fully support you in raising in POTUS. Important considerations. Most of them are hard to know how they will unfold (economy, Ukrainian peace, Gaza, etc.). Whatever the message is, I don't know how Houthis needs to keep focused.
The Hegseth message states, “Waiting for a few weeks or months does not fundamentally change calculus. Two immediate risks waiting: 1) This leaks, we leaks, 2) Israel takes action first, or Gaza has fallen apart – and we cannot begin on our own terms. [is] It's not about Houthis. I consider it two things. 1) Restore freedom of navigation and core national interests. 2) Reestablish Biden's cratered deterrence. But it's easy to pause. And if so, I will do everything I can to implement 100% OPSEC” – Operational Security. “I welcome other ideas.”
Goldberg adds that group members reportedly continued to move back and forth between them. The following day, on Saturday, March 15th, Hegses reportedly sent the message “contains operational details of upcoming strikes in Yemen, including information on targets, US deployed weapons and attack sequences.”
The only person to reply to an update from Hegseth was the person identified as the Vice President. “I'll say a prayer for victory,” Vance wrote. (The other two users then added prayer emojis.)
According to the long Hegseth text, Yemen's first explosion would feel two hours at 1:45pm Eastern time. So I was waiting in the car park at the supermarket. If this signal chat was real, I inferred, the target of Houthi would be bombed soon. Around 1:55, I checked X and searched for Yemen. Afterwards, an explosion was heard in Sanaa, the capital.
Goldberg wrote that he began leaving group chat after deciding it was authentic, reaching out to some of the group members and asking whether the “Houthi PC Small Group” chat was actually real.
On Tuesday, Trump revealed that “staff and aides” added Goldberg to the group chat via signal, continuing to defend Waltz, saying, “I learned the lessons and he's a good guy.”
As reported previously by Breitbart News, other Democrats, such as Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA), also criticised Trump administration officials after Goldberg was “inadvertently added” to the group.
