The Ministry of Health and Human Services has announced that it will cut nearly 10,000 full-time employees.

The division made an announcement on Thursday. This will cut about a tenth of the staff at federal health agencies in the United States.

“Combined with other HHS efforts, including early retirement and forks on the road, the restructuring will result in a total reduction of 82,000 to 62,000 full-time employees,” the agency estimated with its release that Americans will save $1.8 billion from the cuts.

Meanwhile, the fact sheet presented among senior officials shows that “no additional cuts are planned” beyond what was announced on Thursday and in recent weeks.

The fact sheet showed that Health and Human Services Secretary (HHS) Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will cut 3,500 jobs from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and 2,400 will be hired from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

“This reduction will not affect drugs, medical devices, or food reviewers, nor will it affect inspectors,” the FDA fact sheet states.

In total, an estimated 20,000 people will leave the health sector due to other Trump administration cuts, including early retirements and acquisition offers.

Kennedy said this week that the Doge team run by Tesla founder Elon Musk “identified exceptional waste in my department and HHS.”

He also said multiple departments across HHS had too many overlapping work and wanted to reduce wasted spending.

“We're with Elon's help to eliminate redundancy,” Kennedy said Monday.

Additionally, Kennedy also proposes creating a group of new institutions called administration for a healthy America.

“We are instilling a clear mission to radically improve American health and boost agency morale. We will eliminate the entire alphabet soup for our department and institutions while maintaining their core functions,” Kennedy said in a video Thursday.

The administration for strategic preparation and response, which has been promoted to another institution under the Biden administration to oversee tasks such as pandemic-related issues, will be absorbed by the CDC.

Furthermore, work from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, which had expected almost 90% of its employees to be reduced by Doge, has now merged with another agency to create an office of strategy.

“The whole federal workforce is now miniaturized, so this will be a painful time for HHS,” Kennedy admitted in his comments.

The former presidential candidate also said in the video that “they are focusing on reducing excessive managers while increasing the number of scientists and frontline healthcare providers.”

“We streamline our agencies, eliminate redundancy and invite everyone to line up behind a simple, bold mission. I want all HHS employees to wake up each morning and ask themselves, “What can we do to restore America's health today?”,” he added.
